Curriculum

At Sedgefield Primary we believe that our children are the heart of our curriculum. We take into account our pupils' needs and interests when we are planning our curriculum particularly in EYFS. Our curriculum follows the National Curriculum; however we strive to make our curriculum go above and beyond these requirements. Below you will find details about individual subjects including our long-term plans and detailed information about how subjects are taught. Some subjects are taught one half term and then not the next half term, for example History/Geography and Art/DT allowing children to focus their learning more and become experts. This helps our children to know more and remember more. Other subjects are taught weekly, for example, PE, RE and Computing as it is important for the children to have regular opportunities in these subjects. Other subjects are taught daily such as English and Maths.

We use the objectives from the National Curriculum, but adapt them to the needs of our children, making links to the ‘Big Ideas’ we are aiming to develop throughout all subjects:

  • significance and understanding,
  • change,
  • comparison,
  • people and community,
  • the natural world,
  • investigation/questioning and
  • collaboration/creativity/resourcefulness.

These ‘Big Ideas’ are revisited numerous times across different subjects, allowing children to make links in their learning at the same time as developing subject specific knowledge, skills and understanding.

The curriculum at Sedgefield Primary is the whole learning experience offered by our school. It is not only the subjects taught in lessons, but all of the activities and experiences while the children are at school, which nurture the skills, knowledge, attitudes and values that we encourage. During a child’s time at Sedgefield, we aim to develop resilience, motivation, confidence and independence. Each child is valued as an individual and is encouraged to develop to their full potential by making the most of every opportunity presented.

A feature of our school is the way we nurture and support all children.  For more information on how we adapt our curriculum and provision for children with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities, please click here to be taken to the relevant page.

Information on the teaching of phonics and reading can be found in PowerPoints on the Reception class page and the Year 1 class page. Phonics is taught following 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' and our Phonics based Reading Scheme is Collins 'Big Cat'.  'Oxford Reading Tree' is used in KS2 once the children are more confident readers, in order to develop a broader range of reading skills.  Reception parents and this year Year 1 parents are invited to a meeting in October or November to explain everything.  If you missed the meeting, our Reception or Year 1 staff are happy to go over things with you at another time.

"Leaders have developed an ambitious curriculum. All subjects are sequenced detailing the
important knowledge and skills pupils need to acquire as they move through the school."

"The school’s wider curriculum supports pupils’ personal development exceptionally well."
