The National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages aims to ensure that all children:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Are able to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and that they are continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.
  • Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

At Sedgefield Primary we acknowledge that developing pupil’s French language skills will extend resilience and confidence in all subject areas. It will also encourage pupil’s cultural knowledge and understanding. Children develop skills that will open further opportunities later in life through French.  It will support pupil’s transference to Key Stage 3.  French is continued in the secondary school to which the vast majority of our pupils transfer (over 90%).
Children are introduced to French in Year 3 and receive a weekly lesson, throughout their time in Key Stage 2.  The scheme we use to support learning is ‘Language Angels’. However, we use additional resources alongside this scheme to support.

Individual lessons focus mainly on grammar and phonics.  These skills are the drivers for language based learning lessons in French.

In each year group every half term has a specific language based focus. These topics are shown on our French language grid.  Pupils extend their progress and skills to enable them to increase how they can link words or phrases in spoken or written French.  Pupils listen attentively In French to support translating words and phrases and will also learn listen to French song.

Lessons across the Key Stage 2 support the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing in French.  However, there is an increased focus on writing skills, as pupils deepen their knowledge in Years 5 and 6.  We work towards pupils increasing their knowledge to write and speak short paragraphs by using a culmination of skills.  These skills are progressive from short phrases in Year 3 to extended phrases and knowledge of verbs in Year 6.

Our MFL curriculum ensures that children develop their confidence, cultural knowledge and understanding of the world through skills in a language.  Pupils demonstrate a high level of enjoyment through their language lesson.  At the end of Key Stage 2 pupils are increasingly confident in speaking and writing a modern foreign language in their transference to Key Stage 3.
