Our Art Governor is Mrs J Hinde

It is our belief that all children should have access to the Arts in order to foster a lifelong love and appreciation of this subject. We strive to present children with a diverse range of experiences, so that they can experience the Arts from different cultures and periods of historical significance. At Sedgefield our children experience Arts through the Art National Curriculum subjects supported by participation in a range of events and visits provided by the school. We encourage pupils to explore the Arts beyond school and celebrate the skills they develop beyond the classroom as well as those developed within school. We believe this encourages children to appreciate and try a wider range of activities. The skills that are developed in this subject can be transferred not only across the curriculum and thus aid learning, but are integral to our school ethos and promotion of our four learning powers; resilience, resourcefulness, reflectiveness and reciprocity.

The aim of our Art curriculum is to ensure that children’s own experiences will result in them being able to use the visual elements of Art confidently, in their own work. We also expect children to be able to look at an image or a piece of art and to have an understanding of it, not just react to it. We equip them with the skills required to have an understanding of the language of art and design. This enables them to describe what they see in detail and to provide evidence for their observations.

We deliver learning in a variety of ways to ensure access for all of our children. Experiences vary from practical exploration to theoretical knowledge based around key artists in each year group. The artists used promote a range of skills; from architects, designers, sculptors and painters from a diversity of eras and backgrounds, to ensure our children receive a well-rounded understanding of the huge variety of Art and Design skills.

We ensure learning is progressive and pupils build upon previous knowledge and skills so that all children:

  •  Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences.
  • Become proficient in the processes of arts and craft.
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design.
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Class teachers are usually responsible for teaching art, although there will be times when professional artists will be involved in the teaching of the topic. We take every opportunity to develop links with outside agencies and experts in order to enrich our Art and Design provision.

Through their art and design, the children are able to reach out into the community, with their artwork proudly displayed in the local area.

Our children enjoy the self-expression of creativity that they experience in Art. They are always keen to learn new skills and work hard. They are learning to appreciate their work and that of others as they begin to understand that art forms come in lots of different guises and each individual will view things differently and be able to express differing opinions successfully.
